Artificial leather is not a product of leather industry (it is not produced by tanneries). Nevertheless the same classification from the perspective of intended use may be applied to artificial leathers. Leathers, which contain a certain percentage of natural leather fibers (called bonded leather or blended leather or composite leather or recycled leather), occupy an intermediate position between natural and artificial leathers. Bonded leather has a layered structure: fiber or paper backer, a pulp made from shredded leather and a coating which is embossed with a leather-like texture. The pulp is made by shredding leather scraps into leather fibers and mixing it with bonding materials. Nowadays artificial leathers are widely used in production of garments, footwear, bags, furniture, car seats, etc. Nevertheless genuine leather still is the best choice for high quality footwear and leather goods manufacturing. Vegetable tanned leathers are used for the manufacture of expensive handmade leather goods, harness and saddlery. Leather, made of pig skins, due to greater hygroscopicity is widely used as a lining in shoes. Cattle hides are most common material used in leather production. Also sheepskins, goat skins, buffalo and many other kinds of hides and skins are used.
